Sunsets in California

Words and photos by Joseph Koh

I vividly remember the times I broke out into a wondrous smile whenever I saw the sun as I left the office building. Work (even as an intern) was continually descending upon me that it felt like I was making daily attempts at climbing a sand dune.

Fast forward five years — watching the sun slip gently into obscurity is still a luxury. Life careens at such a relentless speed in Singapore that catching a sunset is not only elusive but sacred. Hence, whenever I’m on vacation, I make it a point to chase it down.

Sunsets remind me to b re a th e sl o wl y.

The all-embracing cauldron that stretches beyond the horizon assures me that it is perfectly normal to feel tiny, inviting me to unravel my iron fists and allow God to clasp my hand once again.

As her soft glow lights up the sky like warm embers, it never fails to kindle my cold heart. She shows me that I am a son, silently ushering me onto the lap of the Father.

Sunsets are ever calling us home.

Good morning/ Good evening, still where can I hide from your presence?

Good morning/ Good evening, still where can I hide from your presence?

As I behold you, everything else fades away.

My heart of stone is now a prism — you in me, you through me

My heart of stone is now a prism — you in me, you through me

Change me by your beauty, God.

Change me by your beauty, God.

Psalm 46:10

Psalm 46:10

I cannot walk away, for I have seen your face.

I cannot walk away, for I have seen your face.
